It all started when I was in my bed, my cozy, cuddly bed with all of my favorite stuffed animals, Spot the dog, Peanut Butter the cat, and Love the bird. I was fast asleep when I heard a noise. “Boom!” There it was again,”Boom!” And again,”Boom boom boom boom!”
At last, I couldn’t take it any more. I got out of bed and went into the lounge room. No one was there. Another “Boom!”made me realize it was coming from outside. I looked out the window but it was too hard to see so I put on my robe and my slippers and took out a flashlight from the drawer so that I could walk outside and find out what all the noise was, so I opened the door. There was something at my back. I turned around, but luckily, it was just a tree.
I made my way to where all of the sounds were coming from, and there it was, a loud van. Someone must have been moving in, but this late at night? I peeked in the van and what did I see? Everything. There were big pots, many jars, even a broom. There were many animals there, too. I saw a cat, a raccoon, a skunk, three bats, and too many frogs to count.
I felt a rough finger with sharp nails. It had pale skin. You might ask how I knew this by how it felt. Well, the reason is that I didn’t. I turned around before and saw that scary, white face staring at me with her cold eyes. I felt like I was in a trance, like I was being watched by a billion wolves all hungry for dinner, fighting over me. It wasn’t a happy feeling. In fact, I felt like all the happiness and curiosity took a boat to Florida and were never going to come back ever again. I shook my head and saw the eyes, but before I got in the trance again, the red, purple lips of the woman moved and made a sound, a high sound saying,”Get out!”
I ran as fast as I could and as far as my scrawny legs could carry me. I got inside the house and back in my warm, fuzzy blanket and closed my eyes. I dreamed about those cold eyes of that scary woman.
Next thing I knew, I was in the kitchen with a warm glass of milk and a delicious waffle with maple syrup and blueberries on top, my mom’s special recipe. It felt like I didn’t eat a waffle. It tasted more like a sweet tasting cotton candy. It was when I ate a chocolate brownie that I remembered that it was only 4 days until Halloween.
I went to school thinking about how awesome it would be when I put on that witch costume. I knew it would look lovely on me, or should I say scary? I stopped next to my best friend who was playing a game on her phone when I came. “Hey Julia,” I said. “Want to chat?” We talked about our Halloween costumes and what candies we hoped to receive. My goal was to get at least 15 candies this year.
During art lessons, we had to draw a haunted house with bats, a witch and everything. I did well on that homework project. Stacked in the other homework that I had to do was a math page with multiplication and division equations. It was just a review for a test. Somewhere else in the stack, there was music homework. I had to play piano for at least an hour. There was still more. I still had to make a sculpture of a volcano and put some kind of chemical inside it to make foamy stuff come out of it. The reason I don’t know what chemical to use is that I fell asleep during half of science class. I also had to read for a whole hour.
When I finally finished all that homework, I only had 5 hours until bed time so I thought it might be okay to take one more peek at what the neighbor was doing, so I waited for her to come out of the house and sneakily followed her. I was behind one bush before another, until she got to a park. She took out a picnic basket and I was about to go home thinking she was a normal lady, but then, instead of taking out a lunch, she took out a key and a stick. She used the stick and mumbled a few words and all I could hear was the word, BROOM. Immediately, the broom I saw in the van earlier zoomed in the air and into her hand. The woman hopped on the broom and it flew her up a mountain. Luckily, there was a shop nearby and so I bought a rope. I used the rope to climb up the mountain, and just in time too. She took out her key and opened the door, with me a yard away from her. She went into a strange room that seemed to be a lair. She looked at a map and saw Australia. These exact words came from her mouth,”I shall go there before I take over this place. Hee he he he he.” I ran back home and went to bed and then I never saw that witch again, because it was all just a silly dream…
OR WAS It?
